Fun Facts
This movie is showing on the television in the motel scene in Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987), even though this film hadn't been released yet. Both movies feature Kevin Bacon and John Candy.
Bacon starred in this movie, and cameoed in Planes, Trains & Automobiles while Candy cameoed in this movie, and starred in Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987).
The customized license plate of the Briggs' BMW luxury car read "SHAB". These letters are actually an acronym of the film's title.
This movie was filmed at the same time as two other John Hughes movies: The Great Outdoors (1988), which was written by Hughes, and Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987), which was written and directed by him. Some of the same cast members from both films appear in this film in cameos seen at the end of the picture.
The movie's closing credits bill Nancy Hughes, the wife of John Hughes, for "INSPIRATION".
When Jake is walking through Union Station (after meeting with the Fantasy Girl and just as the lyrics start on the Love and Rockets song), he exchanges a glance with a girl sitting on a bench. This girl (even though she is not shown clearly) looks very much like Molly Ringwald dressed as her character "Clair" from Breakfast Club (another John Hughes movie).
The hospital where Kristy (Elizabeth McGovern) has the baby, The Evanston Hospital, is a real hospital located in Evanston, Illinois. It still exists today (as of 2022), but has been extensively remodeled, to the point of not looking like the hospital in the film. It is also now called the Northshore Evanston Hospital.
John Travolta was considered for the role of Jake Briggs, but the studio would not allow him to be cast.
Curtis Armstrong auditioned for the role of Davis McDonald, the part that eventually went to Alec Baldwin.
Cameos from the following stars, suggesting baby names at the end. Dan Aykroyd, Kirstie Alley, Harry Anderson, Jay and Michael Astin, Matthew Broderick, John Candy, Dyan Cannon, Belinda Carlisle, Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson, Judi Evans, Robert Hays, "Magic" Johnson, Michael Keaton, Joanna Kerns, Penny Marshall, Bill Murray, Olivia Newton John, Roy Orbison, Cindy Pickett, Annie Potts, John Ratzenberger, Ally Sheedy, Lyman Ward, Wil Wheaton and Warren Zevon.
